CHICAGO - The Association for Women Journalists-Chicago is deeply disappointed in the sexist, degrading and wholly unprofessional comments WSCR-AM 670 sports radio host Dan Bernstein made Wednesday, March 25 in relation to Comcast SportsNet Chicago reporter Aiyana Cristal.

Comments analyzing or even criticizing the work of a media professional are fair game, but comments analyzing or criticizing the appearance of a media professional are not, and this board strongly condemns them.

The AWJ-Chicago finds it especially troubling that Mr. Bernstein would use his considerable platform to show such disrespect toward a fellow Chicago journalist.

While apologies from Mr. Bernstein and his colleague at The Score, Matt Spiegel, are a necessary first step, they simply do not go far enough.

The AWJ-Chicago urges The Score and its parent, CBS Radio, to take meaningful steps to correct the sexist attitudes that are all too pervasive in sports media. We invite Mr. Bernstein to hold a dialogue with us on how this toxic culture is allowed to thrive and what we can all do to ensure our work is professional, inclusive and respectful towards all.

The Association for Women Journalists-Chicago supports women in journalism and promotes the respectful treatment of women by the news media. We are a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization.

AWJ-Chicago is comprised of working journalists, academics and students from national, local and regional news outlets and all the major journalism schools in the area. It includes women and men involved in every aspect of the business and across all mediums. Learn more at awj-chicago.org
